Sitting here and listening to Carolina Liar's song, 'Show me what I'm looking for' I have to say these words are resonating with me. Yes world, PLEASE show me what I'm looking for. I have roamed countless job searching sites and applied to every entry-level position ranging from a receptionist to an editorial assistant to a PR/Marketing assistant and let me be the first to say, the post-grad job search is nothing like the movies and TV tell it. There is no swelling up of triumphant background music with the offer of an interview (though there should be) and no slow motion running in heels through the streets of New York to reach the opportunity of a lifetime. MTV camera crews do not follow you around and provide a happy ending (and fat paychecks off screen) to grant you your dream job and Alexis Bledel does not show up with designer work bags in tow to share your job search woes.
Instead, my job search has boiled down to email sending, website roaming and resume revising all to the accompaniment of a glass of wine or pizza. In fact, if I took my job search experience and gave it a 'hollywood spin', I imagine it would go a little something like this...
Very exciting, I know.
