a Modern Day Role Model

When it comes to consuming celebrity gossip and news I guess I'm not different than any other woman-I flip through the gossip mags, raise a judgmental eye brow at one of Lohan's arrest stories and then toss the magazine aside and continue with my life. Celebrities these days all seem to resonate the same message of being rich, irresponsible and tossed in the lime light way too early to handle.

Of course, there are celebrities aside from the Cyrus's and Lohan's of the world that use their fame for something other than being photographed at a club or amusing their 1 million plus Twitter followers. Enter stage right: Anne Hathaway.

I have always been a fan of Anne ever since her debut in the Princess Diaries back in the day. I have a small group of actresses and actors that I root for and Anne has always been amongst them. I have never seen a drunken photo of Anne stumbling out of a limo and I have never heard of scandals involving her doing drugs or any other popular activities that actresses these days partake in. In my opinion, Anne has always seemed to exude poise, class and that "I'm your best friend" quality that only people like Emma Stone capture so well.

In reading Glamour's January 13' issue, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the interview with Anne Hathaway. I have always thought of Anne as composing herself with class but after reading her interview, I know she has brains and thought provoking opinions to boot. This is what a modern day role model should be!

Her interview was eloquent and her opinions were political, compassionate and rooted in humanity. At one point in her interview she says, "I hold back my voice so I can make more of an impact when I do use it. A cause like One Billion Rising is something I want to scream about, and I want you to take that scream seriously because I don't fall out of nightclubs. I don't have photographers capture me spending untold amounts on a handbag." Anne uses her fame and voice for causes that change the world-she has the influence that most of us wish we had just so we could get our thoughts heard. Instead of using that influence to self-promote (or in some cases self-destruct) Anne leverages her fame and power to better the world she lives in. This is a celebrity and this is a role model.

I have read my fair share of celebrity interviews and you really can catch a glimpse of a person's mindset by the way they answer their questions. Some actresses sound shallow, flippant and entirely focused on fashion while others come off as rebellious without a care in the world. I would like to think that if I ever achieved fame at the level Anne has that my interviews would sound like hers-grounded, intelligent and inspirational.

Hats off to Anne for proving that celebrity role models have not gone extinct & hats off to Glamour for choosing a great cover model.
