New York is many things-exciting, unpredictable, spontaneous and inspiring-but when you move here after college the city is far from what is portrayed in Sex and the City. Trust fund babies and those being bank rolled by their parents aside, moving to New York is a whirlwind that tests you on all levels.
Sex and the City shows an island where the most difficult problems stem from men and all restaurants are accessible, designer clothing affordable and celebrities within reach. Gossip Girl painted a world of an Upper East Side where credit cards were limitless and "bad days" were spent shopping at Bendel's and lamenting boy problems on the steps of the Met. Although it is picturesque to imagine life wrapped up in such a lavish, glamorous bow; the truth is that navigating New York in your 20s is a roller coaster-you have movie-like moments and you have low points; but such is life.
It is truly refreshing that Lena Dunham created HBO GIRLS; of all the New York inspired shows out there, GIRLS is relatable and real. GIRLS cuts out the glamour and shatters the illusions that SATC and Gossip Girl portrayed and gives a raw, uncensored view of what it is to make it in New York as a young woman in your twenties.
I am 25 years old and am growing into my own skin and navigating my way through New York emotionally, professionally, romantically and personally and although there are moments of glamour I relate more to GIRLS then I ever did SATC or Gossip Girl.
